This project is co-sponsored by
EC-ASEAN Energy
Facility under a study entitled ‘Increasing the market awareness of the
benefits of energy efficiency improvements at paper mills in Vietnam’. The
study is jointly performed by
Enerteam of Vietnam,
Bisanz Anlagenbau of
Germany, and McBurney Energy Systems Ltd. of the United Kingdom.
The aims of the study are to stimulate pulp and paper mill energy efficiency by increasing market awareness amongst paper mill owners, local and national government, technology suppliers and CDM groups of the potential to implement energy efficiency measures in paper mills. Measures include process efficiency savings, utility energy efficiency savings and multiple steam boiler plant replacement with a central single cogeneration plant.
The study participants will approach mills, analyse their energy uses and develop a series of measures that can optimise their energy efficiency and use of process rejects as fuel. These measures will be communicated amongst the relevant groups through meetings, literature and a dedicated website.
The aim of the study is to have presented the target groups with sufficient information that they will not only understand the environmental, social and economic benefits but will have access to the resources to implement the measures identified.
Educating mill owners on technical solutions will solve the poor technical understanding, identifying potential sources of financing and educating those sources will make capital available, while bringing together mill owners will improve cohesion within the industry allowing larger, more beneficial projects to be implemented.
In Vietnam energy consumption is growing at a very rapid rate as the country’s economy grows and strengthens. However the economy relies on infrastructure and energy plays a vital role. Vietnam needs to build capacity rapidly, with a predicted electricity demand growth of 15%, the actual 2004 growth was in excess of 20% and power shortages are being experienced in some areas already. All measures that can ease the pressure on the energy sector should be explored.
The energy efficiency measures will reduce the energy demand per tone of paper produced and thus assist in securing energy supply in Vietnam. This benefit will be greatly magnified by implementation of cogeneration, as self-generation of electricity will allow highly constrained grid capacity to be allocated to other uses.
